'South Tyneside Receives Lottery Boost' South Tyneside
receives a boost of £460,000 in Lottery grants awarded by the Community
Fund today. South Shields Shopmobility has received £190,000 to continue to provide wheelchair and scooter hire to disabled residents. The Alzheimers Disease Society receives a £90,000 grant towards its work supporting carers of dementia sufferers in the area, while Age Concern gets almost £180,000 towards its health promotion scheme. The scheme includes a mobile aromatherapy service, exercise and arts and crafts. Deputy Chief Officer of Age Concern, Julie Boyack said "Being awarded the grant will enable us to improve the quality of life of many socially isolated older people - and if they cannot come to us we will take the scheme to them." 1. The Community Fund shares out money raised by the National Lottery to charities and to voluntary and community groups. Out of every £1 spent on the National Lottery, the Community Fund gets 4.7 pence. Since it began in 1995 it has awarded over £2.3 billion to more than 52,000 projects throughout the UK.
