Midway through a Parliament, it is easy for the daily blur of politics and political reporting to obscure the real changes going on in our country. In South Shields, you can see how far we have come, but also hour far there is to go.

In education, health, employment and housing, there is positive change. More young people getting good results in tests and exams, shorter waiting times for hospital treatment, higher levels of employment and housing renewal in the private and rented sectors.

But we know too that there are big challenges ahead: to boost further levels of employment, to establish vibrant leisure and shopping facilities in South Tyneside, to make the most of our magnificent riverside and coastline. This is the vision set by the South Tyneside Transformation Plan, launched in June 2002, and being followed through point by point by the Local Strategic Partnership.
